Above the South Colony Lakes are the big walls of the Crestone Needle and the wild gendarmes of the ridge to Crestone Peak. Crestone is Spanish for 'cockscomb.' Elevation 14,197 feet.

The first European to ascend Torreys Peak, botanist Charles C. Parry, named the peak for his botanist colleague John Torrey. Torrey's is frequently mentioned in conjunction with Grays Peak.

The mountain is named in honor of frontiersman Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson. The Crestones are a cluster of high summits in the Sangre de Cristo Range. Elevation 14,165 feet.

Mount Sherman is one of the most nondescript of the fourteeners, and one of the easiest to climb; it is recommended as a beginner fourteener. Elevation 14,036 feet.

Mount Belford is a high mountain summit of the Collegiate Peaks in the Sawatch Range. Elevation 14,197 feet.

Uncompahgre Peak is the sixth highest summit of the Rocky Mountains. The prominent 14,321 foot fourteener is the highest summit of the San Juan Mountains and the highest point in the drainage basin of the Colorado River and the Gulf of California.

Castle Peak takes its name from its castellated summit. It is located 11.6 miles of the Town of Crested Butte on the drainage divide separating Gunnison National Forest and Gunnison County. Elevation 14,265 feet.

The San Luis Peak is situated rather far to the east of the other fourteeners in the San Juans, and has more of a wilderness setting than many of the others. Elevation 14,014 feet.

Mount Columbia is part of the Collegiate Peaks near Buena Vista. Elevation 14,073 feet.

Mount Antero is prized for its gemstone deposits and has one of the highest concentrations of aquamarine in the country. Elevation 14,269 feet.
