Tuning FAQ
- What types of bindings can you mount?
- Most backcountry/alpine touring, cross country, and telemark bindings. We offer mounting options for ATK, Dynafit, Marker, Atomic and Salomon, G3, and Diamir Fritschi bindings. Some exclusions apply, so please call ahead to check on your specific model of bindings. We can’t mount regular old downhill bindings unfortunately - our lawyers would get mad.
- Can you adjust my alpine bindings?
- While we can adjust most backcountry bindings to fit your boot size and din setting, we can’t adjust standard downhill bindings. Our lawyers would get mad about that too.
- Can I bring my skis or snowboard in for a repair or tune up?
- Yes. Definitely. Pricing for repairs depends on how long your skis or board spent in the woodchipper, but we’ll do our best to get your setup riding smoothly again.
- Do I have to make a reservation for ski tunes?
- No. We’re not that organized.
- Can you trim my climbing skins?
- Yes. If you purchase the skins from us, we’ll trim them for free. If you buy them from someone else, we’ll still trim them, but there will be a small fee. Also, we won’t be mad - just disappointed.
- What is involved in a Basic Tune?
- We remove dirt and old wax from your bases, belt grind your bases to smooth them out a bit and open the base material pores, sharpen your edges using a file guide or an electric edger, melt wax onto your bases, iron your bases to impregnate the base material pores with wax (makes a smooth sliding surface), and then scrape off the wax and buff it.
- I just got a tune - why are there wax drips on the sides and topsheets of my skis?
- Our waxing process involves “hand waxing”, which is a slow, messy process utilizing an iron and boatloads of tenderness and care. Compared to the machine waxing, a hand wax is more thorough, longer-lasting, and better for ski performance. But… it’s really messy. Wax gets everywhere. Our shoes get ruined. View those wax drips as a sign that someone loved your skis deeply. Those drips are affectionate little merit badges. Wear them with pride.
- What kind of wax do you use?
- We use Vola Universal Fluoro-free solid wax.
- Why Fluoro-free? Are you guys hippies?
- Kind of. I didn’t shower much in college. Also, Fluoro wax is almost impossible to find now because it’s really bad to inhale (for us), and it’s really bad for the environment (for everybody). It makes your skis slide real good, but panda blubber probably would make them slide real good too.
- What does a base repair entail?
- Base repairs can smooth out nicks, cracks, scratches, and core shots using a process of melting plastic (called P-Tex) onto your ski bases. Our p-tex application involves an extruder and/or drip method, depending on how squirrelly we want to get.
- Can you make my ski bases look brand new?
- We’ll try. Some base damage is too much for us to handle - in which case we can refer you to a more advanced tuning shop. Other base damage might look bad, but not need to be fixed - smaller scratches won’t really affect performance. Sometimes making your bases look perfect would decrease the life of your skis significantly. All of it depends on the construction of your skis, how old they are, what they’ve been through, how deep the scratches are, the current location of Jupiter, etc. Don’t worry - we can talk you through it.
- Can you do custom base/side edge angles by request?
- Yes. Just make sure you’re very specific when you drop your skis off. Otherwise, we’ll set the angles to whatever the manufacturer suggests.
- What is the average turnaround time for my tune up or base repair?
- We can usually get most tune ups and base repairs turned around within 48 hours/2 business days.
- Can I put a rush on my order?
- If you need a rush on your skis or board, let us know. Rush orders are availability-dependent, but we’ll try our best.
- Do I pay at drop off or pick up?
- You can pay whenever you pick up your skis. We’d take payment in advance, but we want to make sure we get your skis right.
- Do you sell skis?
- We can order skis/bindings/boots for you from several vendors, but we don’t keep any downhill backcountry skis in stock. Sorry about it.
