ARKANSAS HEADWATERS RECREATION AREA

Some of the best rafting and kayaking in the world is on the Arkansas River. Whitewater rafting and kayaking are keystones of the outdoors recreation lifestyle we enjoy here in Chaffee County, Colorado. The Upper Arkansas River Valley hosts numerous professional guiding companies dedicated to giving you and your family a safe and memorable whitewater experience.

Though we welcome rafters and kayakers, we value our Arkansas River environment and do not want to see it damaged. Regulations have been implemented to protect the Arkansas River ecosystem:

• Respect the rights and property of landowners and residents - - do not trespass and keep noise to a minimum near homes.
• Boaters move to the other side of the river from anglers and avoid playing in fishing holes.
• Keep pets on a leash no longer than six feet.
• Build fires only in grills and fire pans. Tend them constantly and extinguish them when no longer needed.
• Follow specific regulations posted at individual locations.
• DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE RIVER!
• Water from the river and other streams may look clear and clean but that does not mean it is safe for drinking. Bring your own drinking water or filtration or purification equipment.
• The river has powerful currents even in calm water sections (and is very cold). Always wear a lifejacket when boating. Closely supervise children near the river.
• The river’s side canyons are subject to flash flooding. Avoid camping in side canyons, even those that seem very dry. If you anticipate a flash flood hazard, climb high to stay dry.
